Discussion:
how can I get HAIKU running on my PC?

Hello HAIKU developers,

I can't get HAIKU started on my PC. Some time ago, I filed a bugreport with
details what system I use:
https://dev.haiku-os.org/ticket/8575
It could be a chipset problem. If a developer could fix this, so that HAIKU
can run, I would pay 50 Euro.

Best Regards,

Julius

Has Haiku ever worked on that PC? If so then maybe you can help isolate
what hrev it stopped working on? Try alpha1, 2 and 3, if it worked with
any of those that would be a starting point. Looks like you've tried most
of the troubleshooting hints so far. Have you tried removing any
non-essential cards, or disabling devices in the BIOS such as the audio,
networking etc? Is this a custom built PC or is it a standard off the
shelf per built PC?

Hello,

thanks for the advice. I tried with alpha 1...3 now, same problem. Then I
changed the RAID mode in BIOS from RAID to IDE ... and it works :) (also,
updated https://dev.haiku-os.org/ticket/8575 ). Is there a roadmap for RAID
integration ? :)

Best Regards,

Julius

Nice to see you got it going. No need to send me any money though. Feel
free to donate it to haiku inc if you wish. You did the work here.
As for RAID, no roadmap for that, that I know of. But you can open a new
enhancement trac ticket for it.

It shouldn't reboot unattended just due to this.
At least it should panic with a sensible enough message...

In RAID mode it could well be disabling the IDE controller completely,
replacing it with a proprietary controller interface --- I've seen that
before elsewhere. Has anyone tried Haiku on a machine with no IDE
interfaces whatsoever?

In that case it should just panic with "can't find boot partition",
not hang or reboot...

If it fails that early for you, I would assume there is a bug in the
RAID implementation of your BIOS that causes this. Is there by any
chance a BIOS update you could try?

Still, it would be interesting to know where exactly it fails.

Bye,
Axel.

I already updated the BIOS to the latest version when I saw alpha 4 was not
running. But it didn't change the situation. I would love to debug this,
but have no idea how.

Shame. It looks like you already did everything you can on your end. So
you cannot even enter the boot menu? Would you consider compiling your
own images? If someone pointed you at specific places in the code, you
could then insert debug output to narrow down the spot in the early boot
phase where your computer reboots. Once the exact spot is found, maybe
the fix isn't that hard.

it already crashes before the boot menu. Also, I dont get any serial (com
port) output. Compiling custom images is no problem, I alreday compiled
HAIKU some time ago, any hints / patches are welcome.
